Abstract

This article presents a chronological analysis of the foundational sources of Companion biographies, spanning from the 3rd to the 14th century AH. This study examines a comprehensive range of texts, from Arabic to non-Arabic works, authored by prominent scholars, including Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Imam al-Nasa'i, Ibn Hajar Asqalani, and Muhammad Yusuf Kandhalvi. The analysis delves into the structural composition, stylistic nuances, and thematic foci of these texts, highlighting their respective strengths and limitations. By tracing the evolution of Companion biographies across centuries, this research aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the genre's development, identifying seminal works, such as Al-isaba fi Tameez al-Sahaba and Hayat al-Sahabah, which have significantly contributed to the field. Ultimately, this study seeks to contextualize the scope, limitations, and methodological approaches employed by these foundational sources, shedding light on the rich historiographical heritage of Islamic scholarship.
