Rhetorical Trend in Tafsīr al-Taḥrīr wa-al-tanwīr by Muhammad al-Tahir Ibn Ashur

Abstract

This article aims to highlight the personality and prestigious scholarly status of Sheikh Ibn Ashour among the exegetes in following the rhetorical trend in exegesis. The Sheikh was known for extracting the subtleties of the rhetorical knowledge of the Noble Qur’an, and revealing the secrets of his rhetorical indications that indicate his miraculousness. He was innovative in the field of rhetorical exegesis, and unique from those who preceded him in this course, his work was not just a repetition of the efforts of previous scholars.
This study clarifies the depth of consideration of the Sheikh in dealing with the arts and methods of rhetorical exegesis. He focused on the figurative language of the Holy Quran. His wonderful exegesis “at-Tahrir wa at-Tanwir” expresses the spirit of the conscious exegete who drew his knowledge of the Holy Quran in a different way, as he added new matters to the exegete, which made his exegete different from contemporary exegetes.
