Abstract

This study dealt with the attempts to conquer the city of Constantinople, the capital of the Eastern Roman state, which defined the Byzantine state during the era of Caliph Muawiyah bin AbiSufyan (may God be pleased with him). This study aimed at determining the strength of the Muslims and their readiness to besiege Constantinople, especially in the field of the armada, and that is the interest and follow-up of the Caliph himself for the Islamic armies heading to Constantinople, as well as standing on the stages of the Muslim siege of the city and the difficulties they faced, and then how to end the siege and its causes. The researcher followed the descriptive, analytical and inductive historical research method in presenting and analyzing the information collected from sources and references. The study concluded that the Muslims imposed their control over a number of islands near the city in order to tighten control over them, and that they imposed a long siege on the city that terrified its rulers and its residents, but many circumstances complemented and led to the failure of the siege, and that the end of this siege ended with a successful truce between the two parties. Led to stop the war, even for a temporary period.
