Abstract

Most of the world religions were transmitted, at least initially, through oral tradition. Even today, tradition is passed down from one generation to another in many living religions. However, renewal, reform and modernizations are ongoing processes in many religious traditions which keep them lively and alive. However, this should not lead to mere ascendency of rationalism in the matters of religion. The West, where rationalism holds sway, has been witnessing its destructive effects on its society and there have even been debates on returning to their traditional values. Like many other parts of the Muslim world, Afghanistan has also been experiencing a conflict that has arisen from the debates over tradition and modernity. Khanqahs in Afghanistan have played an important role in such debates. One such khanqah is Khanqah-i Shur Bazar, Kabul, which is associated with the Mujaddidi order of Sufism established by Shaykh Ahmad Sirhindi, popularly known as Mujaddid Alf Thani. This paper will attempt to present and analyze the contribution of Khanqah-i Shur Bazar, Kabul in the ongoing debate of modernity and tradition in Islam.
